Color Chalking with Swink

About seven months ago I did a post on a new product, the Color Bug. It gives your hair a nice, bright bit of temporary color without being stiff or sticky like spray-on colors. It looked neat, but I was hesitant to try it. Would it be messy? Would I do it right? Would it really be temporary? I’ve never dyed my hair any crazy colors, but I always secretly wanted to try.

Swink Style Bar started offering the color chalking as a service, and invited me to give it a try. Mr. Geek could tell you–I was kind of bouncing up and down the morning of my appointment. I was excited for pink hair!

The chalk is messy to put on, but wasn’t too messy once it was in my hair. It did rub off a bit on my jacket, and the color definitely faded throughout the day, but it easily rinses off of everything and rinses out of your hair just as easily. (Pro Tip: If you brush your hair while it’s in it, your brush WILL turn bright pink. It comes off, but still.)

My appointment was so much fun and left me with glamorous and edgy hair that turned a few heads as I walked through the city. I may not be the type to dye my hair permanently, but for special occasions or the right con/cosplay, I can definitely see getting this done again.

You can try it too: Color chalking plus a dry style at Swink is available for $50. If you spray the color with a bunch of hairspray and sleep carefully with a towel over your pillow, you could even keep the color/style for a couple days! Would you try this? What’s the wildest hair color you’ve worn?

I was provided with a free service from Swink in exchange for a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One Up Makeup: Honey Boo Boo

As I’ve mentioned before, my friends and I have started a new geeky makeup channel, One Up Makeup. The lovely Meagan did my makeup for me recently and made me all “glitz”, Honey Boo Boo-style. I made the mistake of drinking a whole lot of Go Go Juice before we started. Take a peek:

Want to make your own Go Go Juice so you can have obnoxious giggle fits while your friends are trying to concentrate? It’s super simple, just a combination of Mountain Dew and Red Bull. I did 2 parts Mountain Dew and 1 part Red Bull so as not to go overboard. It pairs well with Pixy Stix.

We’ll be getting together this Sunday to film a few more videos. What makeup looks would you like to see us do in the future?

Introducing: OneUpMakeup

A couple weeks ago, I gathered together with my friends Liz, Kristina, Meagan, Mallory, and Molly and put together a geeky makeup channel. I swear, filming with this group of girls was like being at an awesome sleepover: I was giggling like crazy the whole time while we played with makeup. I can’t wait to show you some of the videos we’ve done, and am so excited these ladies wanted me to be a part of this new project.

Check out the intro and subscribe to be the first to see our newest videos! And leave a comment letting me know what geeky makeup look you want us to do!

Geek Beauty: Cinderella Makeup at Sephora

Sephora’s acting like your own personal fairy godmother with their new Cinderella-inspired makeup, the first in their new “Disney Reigning Beauties” collection. The eyeshadow palette, above, features 20 shades that are customized to match the original colors of the movie. The collection also features nail polish, lipstick, and a perfume. They even have a swanky (and steampunk-looking) compact mirror:

The collection is available online at Sephora.com and at Sephora stores starting on October 4th. Prices range from $19-175 (for a Swarovski-encrusted perfume bottle).

Will you be picking up the Cinderella makeup? Or are you holding out for a different princess? (I can’t wait to see what they do for Belle, and Ariel, and Jasmine…)

Geek Beauty: Super Inspirations

Fashion and beauty blogs are extremely popular, but it’s hard to find ones that focus exclusively on geek-themed trends. These two are blogs that I keep going back to–their content is cute, geeky, and super fun!

Makeup By Siryn

Makeup by Siryn features intricate and beautiful makeup applications inspired by geeky characters–most often heroes and villains. I don’t have faith that I could recreate the looks as beautifully, but I love getting inspired. She helps me realize that I can go beyond my “barely even there” makeup look!

Looking-Marvelous

Looking-Marvelous takes your favorite Marvel characters and created totally wearable outfits based on them. You can channel your inner geek AND look cute! She takes requests, so if you have a black tie event coming up and you want to look just like Iron Man, she can help you make it happen.

Geek Beauty: Snow White and the Huntsman

I saw Snow White and the Huntsman this weekend, and the best way to sum up the film is “beautiful”. The effects and overall look is gorgeous, but Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart stand out as the fairest parts of the movie. They encompass two different forms of beauty: Theron is breathtakingly perfect, with amazingly intricate clothing and beautiful makeup. Stewart embodies a beauty that glows from within her–you can see the innocence and love her character has through her mostly bare face and perfectly-messy hair. A couple makeup companies have released SWATH-inspired kits. Pair the makeup with some braids, and you just may become the fairest of them all!

Benefit Rare Beauty Kit

This kit will give you the perfect Snow White look–the natural look will leave you with clear, smooth skin, flushed cheeks, red lips, and lush, black lashes.
$45 at Sephora.com.

Deborah Lippmann Snow White and the Huntsman Nail Polish

This polish would have been a treat for the characters in the movie, whose nails were often grimy. The light pink “Prelude to a Kiss” will make you feel like a princess, and “Dark Side of the Moon” will release your inner evil queen.
$25 at Nordstrom.com.

Have you seen the movie? What did you think?

Geek Beauty: Scented Nail Polish

The past year or so, nail polish has taken over as my main beauty obsession. It’s cheap, easy to change, and gives you a chance to try a new color or fashion trend without buying a new outfit. My most recent love: scented nail polish. I used to have some back in junior high, but haven’t seen it around since. It makes my hands look and smell good, and helps me realize when I’m resting my face on my hands (which is a not-so-good habit of mine).

Here are some of my fave scented nail polishes:

Betsey Johnson Nail Colour

This polish is the perfect shade of bright pink and is scented with  Betsey Johnson’s “Too Too” perfume. You won’t even need to wear perfume of your own with this on!
$9.50 at Sephora.com.

 Urban Outfitter’s Perfumed Nail Polish

I currently have the mint greenish color on my hands and it smells like bubblegum. I feel like a fashionable little kid holding bubblegum ice cream! The other scents are: cherry pie, vanilla shake, and raspberry lemonade. This collection is the perfect way to try new colors while constantly wanting to eat your hands.
$14 at UrbanOoutfitters.com (although I found my pack on sale for $4.99 at an Urban Outfitters store)

Amazon.com also has a variety of scented nail polishes available–I  haven’t tried the ones listed, but you can’t go wrong with primary colors and candy scents!

Have you tried scented polish? What do you think?

Geek Fashion: Finds from ECCC

If you’re looking to expand your geek wardrobe, look no further than  your local con. In the past I’ve purchased t-shirts and aprons, but this year I focused on fun accessories. Lucky for you, you can pick up everything I got online! Take a look:

Tardis Scarf

I’ve been eyeing this scarf online for a while, and was thrilled to see it at the con! I bought it instantly. The scarf is long (almost 8 feet), and made from a t-shirt-style jersey knit, meaning it’s light, comfortable, and drapes well. The scarf’s available at Binary Winter’s Etsy shop as well as some sweet t-shirts and ties. You’ll love everything there!

Cupcake Socks

I couldn’t NOT get cupcake socks. PunchBrand.com has tons of adorable clothes and accessories, check them out!

Espionage Cosmetics

I had the pleasure of getting a demo of Espionage Cosmetics by the CEO/Artistic Director, Jaimie Cordero (seen above. Don’t you LOVE her hair?). After the demo, I purchased a few colors and have been wearing them ever since. This makeup is versatile, fun to use, and stays on for a long time. I love it! Be on the lookout for a full post on Espionage in the future.

Geek Beauty: Eyelashes ala Effie Trinket

In the above ad for China Glaze’s “Hunger Games” nail polish, Effie Trinket is shown sporting some PaperSelf Lashes. Her makeup and lashes would be right at home in the Capitol, where whiskers and body paint are normal beauty trends. But could they be worn around today?

I sported the smaller versions of the lashes around for a full day to see how noticeable it would be. To keep things fashionable and not too over the top, I kept the rest of my makeup subtle and paired it with a black dress and grayish sweater.

The lashes themselves were pretty easy to put on and stayed really well throughout the whole day. I lined my lids a bit heavier than usual and amped up the mascara to make the lashes feel more at home.

Throughout the day, I went shopping, attended an event, and attended a Job Hunters meeting. People didn’t seem to notice (or at least comment on) the lashes at first, especially if I was just walking past them quickly on the street. They seemed more surprised that I was wearing a short dress and heels in Seattle when it felt like winter out! When I had face-to-face interactions with store employees, they would often comment on the lashes, or do a double take. If you didn’t know what I was wearing, it apparently looked like I just had a mascara clump or something stuck to my eye. The rest of the day was pretty similar. I noticed people staring at my face a bit more intently when they spoke to me, most likely trying to figure out what was going on.

It was fun to wear the fake lashes, but it seemed as if I either needed to go bigger, or not wear them at all. If I were to wear them again, I would pair them with a standard pair of false eyelashes and wear my hair up to really play up the eyes. I can see these being a playful addition to a more formal outfit or fun night out, my only critique is that they weren’t quite the huge ice-breaker/attention-getter I thought they would be.

Would you wear these lashes? How would you style them?

If you want to try them out, You can get your own pair at Sephora, on sale for $9.
