Burger Cupcakes in Honor of Bob’s Burgers

Cupcake Hero

I wanted to make a burger-themed cupcake in honor of the new Bob’s Burgers season premiere, and I’ve always wanted to try this version I’ve seen around. I thought it would be difficult to make it look convincing, but it was surprisingly easy. I had multiple people asking if they were sliders.

Cupcake Overhead

Bonus? These cupcakes are fantastic if you plan on dressing up as Gene at a con or for Halloween. The cupcakes are the perfect size for his sample tray, and they’ll last a lot longer than real burgers!

Cupcake Close Up

The recipe is adapted from Duncan Hines. Check it out below!

Hamburger Cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 Box Yellow Cake Mix, plus ingredients listed in the instructions on the back
  • 1 Box Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix, plus ingredients listed in the instructions on the back
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (or more, to taste) shredded coconut
  • Red, Yellow, and Green gel food coloring
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds

 Directions:

  1. Bake yellow cupcakes and chocolate cupcakes in greased cupcake pans WITHOUT cupcake wrappers. Follow the instructions on the back of the cake mix boxes.
  2. Let cupcakes cool in the pan for around 5 minutes, then carefully transfer to a rack to completely cool.
  3. Make buttercream frosting by putting the unsalted butter into a mixer and mixing on medium-high until butter is completely smooth and against the bowl.
  4. Slowly add in the powdered sugar to the butter until it is fully mixed.
  5. Add in the vanilla extract and salt and mix until you have a whipped buttercream frosting texture.
  6. Split the buttercream frosting into 3 separate bowls. Add red coloring to one until it looks like ketchup, add yellow coloring to one until it looks like mustard, and keep one white.
  7. Mix the shredded coconut and a small amount of the green food coloring in a bowl until it looks like shredded lettuce.
  8. Slice the yellow cupcakes in half horizontally.
  9. Slice the chocolate cupcakes in thirds horizontally. (You should be able to cut the bottom in half, and then slice a small portion of the rounded bit off the top to create three “meat patties”.)
  10. Spread a small amount of the white frosting in the center of the bottom half of the yellow cupcake. Place a brown cupcake “patty” on top.
  11. Using a pastry bag and a small round tip, pipe the frosting around the edges of the brown cupcake “patty”. Allowing the frosting to fall over onto the sides will help it show up even more once it’s all pieced together!
  12. Sprinkle the coconut “lettuce” on top of the frosting.
  13. Place the top of the yellow cupcake on top of your mini cupcake burger.
  14. Lightly brush the top of the cupcake with water and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
  15. Marvel at the adorable hamburger cupcake you’ve just created! Repeat until all cupcakes have been made.

Bob’s Burgers “Build a Burger” Party

Botd Frankly My Dear

Bob’s Burgers’ 5th season premiere is this Sunday, October 5th, and what better way to celebrate than with a burger party?

I invited some friends over to create puntastic Burgers of the Day. (If you haven’t seen the show, Bob creates a different burger of the day for each episode, and they’re all fantastic. This Tumblr catalogs them all.) I supplied the basics: burger patties, a couple different buns, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and condiments, and encouraged them to bring any weirder ingredients they may need to make their burgers. They outdid themselves. Here is a sampling of some of the burgers, but you can see them all on the Bob’s Burger Party Pinterest Board! (The photo at the top of the post is “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a ham”: Comes with frankfurters and ham. Made by @Satire.)

Botd You Cheddar Believe “You Cheddar Believe It”: Comes with English Cheddar mixed in the patty, topped with more Cheddar. Made by @TifaRobles.

Botd I'm Bacon you “I’m Bacon You to Stop”: Bacon mixed into the burger, comes bacon wrapped. Made by @TheMikeRobles.

Botd Perks of Being “The Perks of Being a Cauliflower”: Comes with fried cauliflower and sriracha mayo. Made by @hudsonfilm.

Botd Cupcake “Piece of Cupcake”: A sneak peek of the burger cupcakes that will be on the blog tomorrow! Stay tuned!

Are you a Bob’s Burgers fan? Will you be tuning in on Sunday for the Season 5 premiere?

Friday Favorites: December 20

Friday Faves 12-20

The year is almost over, and most of my time has been spent trying to wrap up things from 2013 before taking some time off to spend with family. But my mind keeps wandering to 2014 and what’s in store… I’ve got big plans and can’t wait to sit down and assess the projects in my life and find ways to make them bigger and better.

When I haven’t been bogged down with all of that, I’ve been checking out the following:

Favorite Tumblr: The Bob’s Burger Experiment
Someone is making all of the burger specials that are on the board in “Bob’s Burgers.” I want to eat them all. While kicking myself for not coming up with this first. Check it out!

Favorite Music: The NSYNC Christmas Album.
WHAT. Judge me all you want. It’s not Christmas until I listen to it.

Favorite Food: Muddy Buddies
This is my go-to holiday snack. It’s quick, easy, and delicious. The only problem is I end up eating way more than I should. Whatever, I’m gonna make some more tonight. Make some yourself.

Favorite Holiday Helpers: Whole Foods Wine and Cheese Department
I went to a wine and cheese pairing tasting last week at Whole Foods, and it was amazing. The wine and cheese folks at Whole Foods are ridiculously knolwedgeable, and are pretty sassy/fun to boot. I gave them some of my toughest questions (“What’s a good riesling for someone who doesn’t like rieslings?,” “What’s your dirtiest, earthiest tasting wine, and what cheese should I pair with it?” and “Got any wines from the Horse Heaven Hills area?”) and they were able to answer them all with flying colors. Plus, their wines were not as spendy as I thought they’d be. If you need to grab a wine or a nice cheese for a party or gift, hit them up and challenge their knowledge. You’ll walk out with something great.

What are you loving this week?

Friday Favorites: Friday 13

Friday Faves Sept 13

It’s Friday the 13th! But instead of focusing on superstitions, I’m making hundreds of cupcakes and celebrating the love of some good friends at their wedding. It shall be a glorious day! While I’m busy making cupcakes and tearing up at vows, you can check out some of my favorite things from the past week!

Favorite Video: Cinderonce
Todrick Hall, who apparently was on American Idol and is also a thing on YouTube, made this fantastic video retelling the story of Cinderella through Beyonce songs. It’s worth watching for the costumes and choreography alone. Find it on YouTube.

Favorite TV Show: Bob’s Burgers
Yeah, yeah. It’s been on for years. I just started watching Bob’s Burgers a month or so ago and I can’t get enough of it. It’s funny, quirky, and actually kind of sweet.

Favorite News: JK Rowling’s Writing a Screenplay!
JK Rowling is creating a screenplay based on the Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” It will focus on the author of the book, Newt Scamander, and will take place 70 years prior to the Harry Potter series, and will start in New York. All exciting things! Read all about it here.

Favorite Clothing: BlackMilk’s Harry Potter Collection
It’s as if BlackMilk knew of the JK Rowling announcement when they decided to push their Harry Potter line launch back to this week. The clothing is all really fun looking, and I’m coveting the Marauder’s Map dress, but unfortunately, BlackMilk prices are still pretty steep. I’m holding out for another sale around my birthday like they did last year! See the whole collection here.
