Your Favorite Book on a Locket

custom book locket 1

Wear your favorite book close to your heart with these amazing lockets. JunkStudio will take the cover of your favorite book, miniaturize it with magic, and turn it into a locket. You can then insert your favorite quote or a picture from the book on the inside. What a cute idea! I can see this also being a meaningful gift. I’d love to give one to my mom–she instilled a love of reading in me from a very young age.

If I were to get one for myself, I’d most likely pick the book “The Time Traveler’s Wife” as it’s one of my favorites, and the name alone can concoct up thoughts of Doctor Who and other time travel stories.

What book would you select?

Book Clutches

BookClutch

I’ve been drooling over these Kate Spade clutches for years, and the brand has just started promoting them again (and put The Great Gatsby on sale, just in time for the movie!).

These clutches are the perfect way to show a bit of personality (and your love for the literary arts) while out and about–I would personally love to pair it with a more formal dress for a wedding or other fancier occasion.

The clutches come in The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, Emma, The Importance of Being Earnest, I Married Adventure, and A Tale of Two Cities. At $325, the clutches are a bit pricey. If it’s too much for you and you like to get crafty, you can always make your own (and bonus, you can pick the book of your choice!).

Find the clutches at KateSpade.com.

Home Decor Inspired by Doctor Who

Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who (Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS) was my favorite of the season so far. As the title would indicate, we got to explore a bit more of the inside of the TARDIS, and included in that is a grand library with a few fun items. I personally would love to incorporate the feel of that library and these items into my own home decor!

Encylopedia GallifryGallifreyan encylopedias house verbal stories and facts in bottles, and they look amazing on a shelf. This forum is currently discussing the bottles and where to get them to make your own encyclopedia. If you don’t care if it’s the same bottle, then just get enough of the same bottle to fill your shelf, print out your own labels, and stick them on with some spray adhesive or rubber cement. You can go above and beyond by sticking a small recording device in the top of some of the bottles: when you remove the top and press “play” your own recorded history can begin spouting out, just with less purple smoke.

Doctor Who - Series 7B

I fell in love with this grand book and book stand when I saw it. Although we can’t purchase the book (yet–give it time, I’m sure it’ll be made), we can take the idea of putting our books on display and run with it. Find an old book that means something to you, and find an area of your house where you can display it prominently on a stand. Can’t find a giant gold book stand like the one in the episode? Look for cookbook holders. They’re often intricate, pretty, fairly inexpensive, and just take up a bit of room on a countertop. I have an antique one I bought a few years back, but Amazon.com has some antique-looking ones available for under $30 each. I recommend this one and this one.

Really want the look of the Time War book? Etch the shape and designs into clay, bake it, then adhere it to a fake leather-bound journal. Voila!

What elements of Doctor Who and the TARDIS would you incorporate into your home?

Litographs: Wear a Book

Sherlock Photo 1

Litographs are about to be all over your walls and body. Seriously.

If you love reading and want to share that love with the world in a cool way, you need these. They create prints and shirts that feature the text of an entire book, displayed in a silhouette that hints as to which book it is.

Sherlock Photo 2

They offered to let me try out a couple designs, and I jumped at the chance to get this sweet Sherlock shirt. It’s now one of my faves! It’s comfy and unique–I haven’t seen any other shirts that have been printed all over like this before. Plus, the guy who gets stuck behind me on a bus will be entertained for hours. ;-)

I also got the print of The Odyssey for my Greece-themed bathroom. It’s really neat looking, but HUGE, and the light blue is a bit hard to read. I’d recommend getting the colored prints if you’re going for more aesthetic appeal, and black ink if you want people to actually be able to read it. A lot of these books are LONG and the print will be very tiny.

Litographs introduces new books into their store every week, so if they don’t have our fave yet, just wait!

Basically, Litographs is the best gift you can get a book lover. Are you the literary type? Then it’s elementary, Dear Watson. Treat yourself.

Novel Prints, $24-39 each. T-shirts, $34 each. Check them out for yourself at Litographs.com.

Smart and Fashionable: Book Scarf

bookscarf

It’s winter, and all I want is to cozy up with a scarf, some tea, and a good book. These scarves by storiarts are the perfect thing. They’re classy, stylish, and functional: each scarf features a page from an actual book, making them great to have on hand while you’re waiting for the bus or bored at work.

The books featured on the scarves change often, so keep checking back for your favorite!

Smell Like Your Favorite Author

The Library collection of candles won’t make your home smell like old books–instead, it will make your home smell reminiscent of your favorite author. Whether you prefer the cardamom, sandalwood and absinthe scent of Edger Allan Poe or the gardenia, tuberose and jasmine scent of Jane Austen, there’s a candle for you. I personally think Oscar Wilde would make a fantastic candle for the kitchen–it’s cedarwood, thyme and basil!

Which author do you most want your house to smell like?

Leather Book Case for MacBook Pros

I’m suffering roomie withdrawals from SDCC, so I’ve been gravitating towards book-themed goodies (a favorite of my roommate, Rachael’s) over the past couple days. She and I shared many great conversations on books, and I now have a giant list I need to get started on. When I’m not reading, I want to rock my laptop in this book case so I can seem just a bit more intellectual.

Geeky Gifts for Dad

Father’s Day is this Sunday, and today’s pretty much the last day to get something shipped to you from Amazon Prime. (Yes, that’s how I assess the closeness of all holidays and big events.) Still have no clue what to get your geeky dad? Take a look at these suggestions from me and some of my twitter followers:

Collectible Action Figures

Your dad is your superhero. so why not show him by getting him a sweet action figure? Shawn from Dad Unmasked is hoping for this Iron Man figurine: “As you can tell from my blog, I’m really into the superhero things for as long as I can remember. I am decorating my house (in a classy way) with cool superhero drawings and figures. I am also collecting AVENGER figurines and I’d really like to complete the set. I keep them on my desk at home next to my IMac of course. :)

An Apron

If your dad likes to bake, cook or grill, or is just a really messy eater, pick him up a sweet apron. I’m loving these superhero ones–Amazon has a variety of Marvel and DC characters available.

A Good Book

What’s better than relaxing with a good book? Get your dad one of your favorites, or one he’s had his eye on. Better yet, get a copy for both you and set a follow-up lunch date to discuss it!  Charlie (of  various publications and twitter) tells us why he wants a book: ‘After playing all the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, Metro 2033, sitting through countless survival horror/open world/zombie/apocalypse video games, pen-and-paper role playing, and board games I just want to curl up with a nice single player book. I’ve been eyeballing a vintage collector’s edition of Roadside Picnic for some time, but lo and behold there’s a reprint out right now for a measly $11 on Amazon. This classic Russian novel spawned a movie, a video game franchise (recently deceased), and an ardent band of Chernobyl-loving Zone freaks intent on living their cosplay fantasies from behind Geiger counters and surplus respirators. I would recommend against the digital version, however. You’ll want to be able to read this one after the end-times while you’re drinking filthy water from a ditch… for the irony.”

A Little Bit of Everything

Still not sure what to get him?  How about a bunch of fun, smaller goodies? Think Geek has put together three sizes of Father’s Day tins, and they’re currently 25% off their original price. The gifts include edibles, minifigures, cubicle toys, and tools.
Father’s Day Tin, $29.99-59.99 at ThinkGeek.com

Whether you get him a gift or not, make sure you let your dad know how much he means to you this weekend. Happy Father’s Day!
