EMP’s Fantasy Exhibit

Tara Throne

If you find yourself in Seattle, you’ve gotta check out the EMP Museum’s new Fantasy exhibit. This exhibit is the third and final part of their permanent exhibit’s redesign that focuses on exploring our hopes, fears, and dreams. Our hopes are found in the Sci-Fi exhibit,  our fears in the Horror exhibit, and now our dreams can live in the Fantasy exhibit.

I had the pleasure of checking out the exhibit and partaking in opening night festivities this past Friday, and I had a great time! (I swear, I didn’t have to fight anyone to win a seat atop this throne!)

EMP Fantasy

The exhibit itself was well laid out with beautiful features like straw on the floor, metal sheeting on an in-exhibit house, a dragon’s cage (complete with dragon with glowing eyes and a nice soft purr!), and fun secret areas kids or small adults can climb through.

The movie/tv props all look amazing in person–I was impressed with the quality of the weapons and  costumes and enjoyed seeing items from The Princess Bride, Xena, Snow White and the Huntsman, Harry Potter, and many others, up close. I also loved seeing the hand written manuscripts and notes from J.R.R. Tolkien, and the comparison of a page from George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” with the same scene in script form for the show “Game of Thrones.”

In addition to props and artifacts, the exhibit teaches people more about the Fantasy genre, and allows you to complete interactive activities like building your own map. (For those interested, you can then save and print out your map to take home!)

You can find out more about the exhibit and the museum as a whole at EMPMuseum.org. Check it out! (And while you’re there, make sure you also check out the sci-fi and horror exhibits. They’re all extremely well done.)

Game of Thrones Party

GoT Party Collage

Game of Thrones comes back on Sunday…are you prepared?  If you haven’t planned a viewing party yet, it’s not too late! Here are some tips on how to throw a quick and killer party to accompany the premiere of season three:

  • Visit your grocery store and pick up some nice breads, cheeses, salami, olives, and figs to put together a great plate of snacks. The more rustic looking, the better! You’ll eat as the characters do and the foods will perfectly complement a nice beer or wine. If you have the time and are feeling adventurous, you can make your own bread and salami with recipes from The Unofficial Game of Thrones Cookbook!
  • Speaking of beer and wine, make sure you pick up Ommegang brewery’s Iron Throne Blonde Ale, the official Game of Thrones beer. The ale is limited edition, so pick up a few if you find it! I found my bottle at Cost Plus World Market.
  • House pint glasses, shot glasses, and coasters will be an excellent piece of decor or party favor! You can find all of the house sigils and more Game of Throne goodies from Things From Another World.
  • Remember the Game of Thrones Arms Creator I posted about yesterday? Set up a station where your friends can create their own arms and print it out. Hang them up with clothespins during the party, and let them take it home with them as a souvenir after the event’s over.

What will you be doing for the premiere?

Game of Thrones Beer

Game of Thrones Beer

As a complete shock and surprise to EVERYONE, the world did not in fact end today. So now that we’re all still around, let me give you something to look forward to! In addition to new episodes of Game of Thrones in March, you’ll be able to sit down to watch them with a cold, themed beer.

HBO has teamed up with Ommegang, a brewery in upstate New York, to create Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which will be released around the same time as the new season.

According to sources, “Iron Throne is a blonde ale at 6.5% ABV and brewed with a robust amount of pils, honey, aroma malts and red wheat. Gentle hopping includes Styrian Golding and Hallertau, appropriately noble hops.”

…I’m already planning the party.

(While you wait for more info on the beer, make sure you grab your Game of Thrones steins so you’ll be all ready when it’s released!)

Urban Decay: Geekier Than I Thought

I was browsing the homepage of Urban Decay yesterday and noticed a few choice phrases being used:

The big question is:

Is Urban Decay trying to appeal to the geeky demographic?

Do they employ a copywriter that is sneaking in geeky phrases to the delight of people like us?

or

Are these phrases “mainstream” enough that they warrant a place on a large makeup company’s site?

No matter what, it’s a win for us geeks and an excuse to support a cool brand. If you needed a reason to get some new glittery eyeshadows, you’re welcome. Check out the site for yourself at UrbanDecay.com.

Contest: Espionage Cosmetics’ New Collection

I’ve told you all about Espionage Cosmetics before, and I’m thrilled to premiere another new collection of theirs. They’ve taken one of my fave shows (that’s full of sexy and powerful women) and used it as inspiration for their newest collection: “A Collection of Ice and Fire.”

Whether you prefer dragons or political espionage, this palette will get you looking gorgeous and ready for the throne. The colors and their descriptions are as follows:

Sun & Stars (gold/Yellow color)

Sometimes in the battles of war, we lose the ones we love, but the beauty of that love shines on forever. Sun & Stars radiates a golden glow of fading love with a hint of red shimmer like the heartbeat of devotion that never ends.

Not Today (matte red)

May the gods of death be damned because beauty this true doesn’t die. One true red- no shimmer, no shine, just pure color. For the lips, for the cheeks, for the heart of beauty. Forever.

Knight’s Watch (blue shimmer)

It’s that moment between sunset and nightfall that takes your breath away in a combination of shimmering gold and cerulean blue. Whether you’re a badass warlord or a defender of good against evil, Knight’s Watch is more than just a war paint. It’s a vow to be awesome… til death.

Iron Price (charcoal grey)

Smokey eyes don’t ask for attention, they command it. With Iron Price as a driving force, your eyes are sure to storm any castle like rolling clouds that spark diamond flashes of lightning. Beauty is the new world power.

It’s available for $27.99 for the full collection or $7.50 per color at EspionageCosmetics.com (and they’re offering FREE shipping for this collection!). Want to win a set? Enter using the Rafflecopter below! The contest is open to readers from US and Canada.

Game of Thrones Cookbooks

I hope you’re ready for stew, because two different Game of Thrones-inspired cookbooks are available for pre-order. A Feast of Ice and Fire, the official companion cookbook, won’t be available until May 29th. But if George R.R. Martin’s blessing means nothing to you, then you can put your order in for The Unofficial Game of Thrones Cookbook, available on April 18th. Both cookbooks will feature food similar to that served in the books and tv series, and will be perfect for your theme parties or just a nice, hearty meal to make when Winter is coming.

Neither book will be out in time for the second season premiere of Game of Thrones on April 1st, so this recipe from The Unofficial Game of Thrones Cookbook will have to hold you over:

Pre-order your books now!
The Unofficial Game of Thrones Cookbook, $10.06 at Amazon.com.
A Feast of Ice and Fire, $23.10 at Amazon.com.
