Geek Etiquette: Female Role Models

The Geeky Hostess is gonna help you get your manners on! Have an etiquette question or topic suggestion? Email tara@geekyhostess.com!

A Katniss Barbie doll is available for pre-order today, which makes me pretty excited. This tough girl is family-oriented, not fixated on beauty, and extremely brave. The Barbie is not dressed in her flaming red dress or anything cutesy–it features her arena outfit with a loose braid and no makeup.

The doll and the success of the Hunger Games has made me wonder: are we getting stronger, more well-rounded female role models? Are girls “playing pretend” as Katniss instead of a princess waiting to be rescued? And is Katniss, a character in a very violent book/movie series, a good role model? Or is it teaching girls that violence is an acceptable response?

I’d like to open this up to all of you: What are your thoughts on society’s current female role models, fictional or not? Who is your female role model? And if you have kids, who do you steer them towards?

Guest Post: When a Themed Wedding Just Doesn’t Work

My friend Margaret (of Nimble Narwhal Creations) has been keeping me up to date on wedding trends as she plans for hers. I asked her to do a guest post on a trend we’ve both been observing lately: themes that perhaps shouldn’t be tied in with a wedding.

One of the nice perks about planning your own wedding for blog nerds like me is filling up your feed with tons of ideas. Inspiration shoots often choose a movie as their theme, and often times it’s really cool to see what they come up with. Recently, I’m sure due to the popularity of the books and upcoming movie release, there have been several shoots done using The Hunger Games. Now, this seems like an awfully odd choice to me. Maybe it’s just my personal taste, but I don’t plan on incorporating things into our wedding that remind me of children killing each other, the harsh realities of poverty and the scary warning of what our reality-tv obsessed society could become.

A recent wedding blog post “wanted to channel their enthusiasm for the movie into a wedding shoot that would inspire brides who want a gloomy, yet pretty edge to their wedding.” I’m sorry but who are these brides? If you’re planning on bringing some gloom to your wedding…might I suggest some premarital counseling? I’m pretty sure my guests want a good meal, not bloodsports.

But hey, maybe there are some of you out there saying no way, this theme is awesome. So I’ve come up with some truly inspired Hunger Games elements to incorporate into your special day.

  • The Reaping: put your closest friends’ names in a hat. Whoever is drawn must then pay for the dress you select, making sure it is flammable. Bonus points if you make them wax their entire body.
  • Dress: should reflect only the most cutting edge style and be better suited for an art installation than an outfit. Shoes of no less than 8” high are a must. Add some sparkle with various anti-political buttons and stickers.
  • Cornucopia: After your nuptials, guests will be released to the dining area. Watch out for booby-trapped place settings and flying knives. Only those who are able to make it to the main table will be served.
  • Presents: will be dropped from the ceiling with silver parachutes whenever the bride & groom act lovingly towards one another.
  • Dessert: of course, is a nightlock berry tart.

What do you think? Would you incorporate elements of The Hunger Games into your wedding? What’s the weirdest wedding theme you’ve heard of?

Geek Fashion: Dress Like A Tribute

After a wildly successful opening weekend, it looks like The Hunger Games will be sticking around for a while. Lucky for us, many of the characters/costumes in the movie are pretty easy to recreate (especially since they didn’t take the Capitol people to the level of body paint and whiskers).

NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association) has come out with some great Tribute/arena gear that could easily take you from cosplaying at a convention to your local gym without anyone batting an eye.

Training Shirt

Represent District 12 and wick sweat away with this replica Tribute training shirt. $59.99 at Amazon.com.

Katniss’s Arena Jacket

When your training takes you outside, or you must brave the elements while fighting your way to the nearest sale, this replica of Katniss’s arena jacket will keep you dry. $149.99 at Amazon.com.

District 12 Nylon Sack

Perfect for cons, the gym, or hiding meds around your house. Other districts are available as well, in case you see yourself more as a Career Tribute. $39.99 at Amazon.com.

Which character are you wanting to cosplay as, now that you’ve seen the movie?

Hunger Games-Inspired Drinks

It wouldn’t be a Geeky Hostess party without some cheesy themed drinks, so these are what I’ll be serving at my Pre-Hunger Games Party tomorrow night:

The drinks are based off of some of the most well-known adults in the first book.
From left to right: Snow, Effie, Cinna, Haymitch

Attendees of my party will begin the night with one slip of paper in the reaping bowl. As the night goes on, they must put their name in each time they get a drink, lose a game, or make a party penalty (as decided by the others throughout the night). At various times, names will be drawn out and those “Tributes” must Wii box or Just Dance for our enjoyment. Let’s see what drinks the party-goers will be receiving tesserae for!

Snow:
A White Russian with a drop of grenadine.

2oz vodka
1oz coffee liquor
light cream
drop of grenadine

Pour vodka and coffee liquor over ice, fill with light cream. Place a drop of grenadine on top, and allow to sink to the bottom.

Effie:
A pink and bubbly drink worthy of Effie.

1oz Alize Red Passion
champagne

Pour the chilled Alize in a champagne flute, fill with champagne.

Cinna:
A simple drink with a fleck of gold, just like his signature look.

1 shot of Goldschlager

Haymitch:
Who are we kidding? Haymitch doesn’t even need a glass. Just give him a whiskey bottle straight. (My attendees, however, can  have their whiskey neat or on the rocks in a glass if they so choose.)

As you can see, these are all super simple drinks that can add a bit of pop to your Hunger Games pre-party. What will you be drinking?

Geek Beauty: Hunger Games Nail Polish

Colors, from top to bottom: Smoke and Ashes, Agro, Fast Track, Luxe and Lush.

I’ve mentioned the Hunger Games nail polish back when it was first announced, but I had the privilege of trying some of the colors a couple days ago. I have to say, I’m very impressed. The initial ads made the colors look cheap and not too attractive, but this is actually some of the best nail polish I’ve found.

The polish, made by China Glaze, is thick, creamy, and extremely easy to put on. I am the worst at putting on nail polish, and even I was able to put it on without too many errors. My polish normally smudges or chips within hours of applying, and I’m on the second day with this stuff looking good as new. The darker colors went on easily with one coat, although I did two for each nail in the picture above. The polish dries very smooth, even the ones with glitter dries as smooth as the ones without.

Most importantly, these colors aren’t so closely tied with Hunger Games that they could never be worn again. In the Capitol Colours collection from Ulta that I purchased, you get the four colors shown above: ranging from subtle to intense. These colors can work in any season, for any type of person. The rest of the collection features even more versatile colors.

The Hunger Games collection can be found at Sally Beauty Supply and Ulta, but supplies are running low.

What color do you think I should sport to the premiere Thursday night? And what color(s) will you be getting?
