Excitement is in the air in the Geek World. This week brought us Hunger Games: Catching Fire and is about to bring us the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special. I’ve loved catching up on all of the trailers and excitement and can’t wait to see the reviews and posts that next week brings! Here are some of my favorite things from this past week:
Favorite Trailer: Job Hunters Season 2
We launched the teaser trailer for Job Hunters Season 2 today. It gets me excited and I know what happens! Watch it here and share it with your friends!
Favorite Kickstarter: Zeppeldrome
A boardgame involving dirigibles that encourages you to screw over your neighbor. I’m already intrigued! Plus, I know the folks behind it and they do fantastic work. This is a solid bet if you’re looking for a fun new game! Check out the Kickstarter page here.
Favorite Movie: Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The new Hunger Games movie is FANTASTIC. Much better than the first. I’ve read the books are there are still parts where I jumped during the film. I was on the edge of my seat, I laughed, I cried, I was in awe of the beauty in some of the shots. Just go see it!
Favorite Drink: Birthday Cake Tea
I’ve been sipping on a birthday present from my brother lately, and it’s Birthday Cake tea from David’s Tea. It has sprinkles and freeze dried ice cream bits in it. Enough said.
What are some of your favorite things from the past week?
I want to take a quick minute to thank Brad Roberts. He donated to the Job Hunters Kickstarter campaign at a level that got him a dozen Geeky Hostess cupcakes of his choice. Without him, we may not have been funded! So if you’re a Job Hunters fan out there, thank him. In fact, you wouldn’t have gotten Season 2 of Job Hunters OR this delicious cupcake recipe without him! (And yes, that is a cupcake on top of the Season 2 script. And yes, I did purposely cut off the title. I’m mean like that.)
Brad chose to have me create cupcakes based off of this Apricot Nectar Cake recipe. What resulted was a light, fluffy, and fruity cupcake that works with or without the frosting! (Brad prefers the cake in a more traditional format sans frosting. I, being a bit obsessed with anything buttercream, choose to keep the frosting. It’s delicious either way!)
Brad Roberts Cupcakes
1 box yellow cake mix
3/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup apricot nectar
1/3 cup hot water
1 (3 oz.) package lemon JELLO mix
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place 24 cupcake wrappers in cupcake tins.
Mix the cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and apricot nectar together.
Dissolve the JELLO mix in the hot water and add to cake batter. Mix well.
Pour the batter into 24 cupcake tins evenly.
Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick/cake tester can go through the cake cleanly.
Lemon Buttercream Frosting
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
4-5 cups confectioner’s sugar
1 TBS vanilla extract
3 TBS lemon juice
Mix the butter and confectioner’s sugar together until well mixed, light, and fluffy.
Add in vanilla and lemon juice, mix well.
If the frosting is too soft, add in more confectioner’s sugar. If it’s too stiff, mix in a bit more lemon juice.
Fill a pastry bag and pipe onto the cupcake.
Are you a frosting or no-frosting kind of person? Let me know in the comments!
I’m on my way to sunny Anaheim for a weekend full of Youtubers and Disney! It doesn’t get much better. If you’re at VidCon, make sure you say “Hi!” I’ll be doing a Job Hunters panel on Friday at 11am, and I’ll be manning the Job Hunters merch section at the Wyrd booth at various times throughout the weekend.
Job Hunters merch includes some cute postcards that you can fill out and we’ll mail for you, and some posters that make perfect signing-material for our panel! I also have some free Job Hunters and Geeky Hostess swag if you find me around the con.
Happy Friday! It looks like Seattle’s finally remembering it’s almost June. I’m looking forward to a sunny weekend ahead of us!
Favorite Video: Job Hunters
We’re busy in pre-production for the second season of Job Hunters, and it’s been fun being back in that mode. Second season is going to be amazing, and it’s a good chance to go back and watch the first season. Check it out if you haven’t already!
Favorite Activity: Re-Watching Arrested Development
This is more of an anticipatory activity, because I haven’t had the chance to do much of it yet, but from the couple of episodes I’ve re-watched, I’ve already loved it more. My friends are saying the same thing. Give it a try!
Favorite Site: Netflix
Oh dear, I’ve fallen onto the Netflix bandwagon. I’m doing my best to get everything out of my system before my free trial runs out, but there are so many cool shows and movies that I’ve missed on there! Plus, I hear I have to check out some of their original shows (House of Cards and Hemlock Grove). What would you recommend I see while I still have Netflix?
Favorite Exercise: Prancercise
You know you want an excuse to prance around town, and now you have it. If anyone asks what you’re doing, just do your best “hipster-only-doing-this-ironically” look and say “Prancercising.” Anyone making fun of it is just jealous they’re not confident enough to do it.
Whew. Did this week fly by for anyone else? Here are the things that have been keeping my brain occupied for the past week!
Favorite Home Good: Cake Stands
I’ve been wanting a great cake stand or cake plate for a while. It makes the presentation better and if it has a lid, it keeps your baked good fresher longer as well! Unfortunately, my small kitchen means that items with only one use aren’t usually purchased. However, this cake plate can also be used as a platter and a salad bowl. Ridiculously cool and not too expensive!
Favorite Video: Job Hunters Table Read
We took footage from our table read of Episode 6 and spliced it with footage of the final product. Take a look at the changes made from script to scene, and see what it’s like to cold read something! You can see it here.
Favorite App: TicTrac
If you’re a stats nerd, you can finally get all of the stats about yourself and your life in one place. TicTrac syncs with pretty much every app/social media site you use and will compare the data against each other, creating awesome graphs and charts. Plus, you can create goals and tell it what to track to get you closer to that goal. Don’t have a goal in mind? “Shop” in their Project Store and get some pre-existing goals. Sign up for your account at Tictrac.com.
Favorite Treat: Leftover Easter Candy
I have to eat it all up so it’ll be gone and I can start eating healthy/exercising again. That’s how it works, right? Either way, I’ve been living off of jellybeans and mini chocolate eggs. I’m ok with this.
Favorite Kickstarter: Job Hunters
Ok, you all knew it was coming. We’re down to a little over a day left. We still need your help. Please, consider donating even a few dollars, and tell your friends. We really want to do a second season, and are SO close to making it happen. Donate at Kickstarter.com.
This Saturday from 12pm-6pm PDT, I’ll be live online. Yes, for 6 hours straight. The Job Hunters producers will be counting down the final hours of our Kickstarter campaign with our traditional live show. Basically, we’ll do goofy and embarrassing things in exchange for your donations. Last year included nicknames, eating disgusting things, a sing-along, and a giant jump into a pool among other things. Who knows what this year has in store for us?
Our tentative schedule so far:
12:00 – Intro/Welcome/Q&A
1:00 – Dating Game with Job Hunters characters
2:00 – Play-through of Job Hunters Showdown!
3:00 – Job Hunters Interactive Mafia!
4:00 – Gaming Hour – there will be some surprises here!
5:00 – Final Hour Ramp Up/Excitement/Dares
6:00 – FINISHED!
I’ll update this post with the link when I have it, but in the meantime you can RSVP on Facebook to be one of the first to get the link. Stop in, stay awhile, and see why Job Hunters is so important to me!
I’m so psyched to announce that my web series Job Hunters has teamed up with Wyrd Miniatures to make Job Hunters Showdown–a card game that you can currently only get by donating to our Kickstarter.
The game allows you to battle a character of your choice with another character, and will be available in a variety of themes and brands once it’s released fully later this summer. When you’re not in the mood to play the game as it’s written, you can also use the cards as a standard card deck, so you can still play Poker, Solitaire, Go Fish… whatever floats your boat.
You can get the cards by donating to the $39 “Showdown” incentive level or as an add-on to your current incentive by increasing your pledge by $30. Check it out at Kickstarter.com!
(Only a couple more days to donate if you haven’t already! We’ll be doing a live show on Saturday counting down the final few hours–more info to come. And then I promise I’ll stop bugging you!)
To show our appreciation for everyone who’s been donating and sharing our Kickstarter campaign, we created this contest! Haven’t watched the series, donated, or shared out our Kickstarter yet? There’s still time! Just follow the instructions in the contest below:
It’s time for some more Friday Favorites! These are things I’ve personally been loving this week. Check it out and let me know in the comments what your favorites of the week have been!
Graphic Novel: Husbands
You may have seen the web series. You may have read the individual issues. Now you can get the trade, starting on March 27th. I took a peek at it, and laughed out loud multiple times in the first few pages alone. The writing is snappy, the art is fun, and I may like it even more than the web series it’s based off of! Plus, Neil Gamin wrote the intro. Because it’s that awesome. You can pre-order it here.
Kickstarter: Job Hunters
Another day, another mention of Job Hunters. We did the math, and if all of our existing subscribers donated $3 to the campaign, we’d be well over our goal. Help us out, even with a few dollars, right here! And if you have donated, we’ve got awesome “Tiny Marshmallow” badges for you!
Treat: Banana Bread
In an effort to let less food go to waste, I made some impromptu banana bread this week with some browning bananas and some household staples. Bonus: I used the same recipe that I used at 4am during Extra Life! You can find the recipe here.
Airline: Virgin America
I’m lucky enough to get to fly to and from Boston on Virgin, my favorite airlines. You just feel cooler riding in their planes. Plus, they’s relatively inexpensive, I’ve never had delays on their flights, their food is healthy, tasty, and sometimes cheaper than in the airport, and their entertainment options keep me happy even if I’m in the middle seat. I’ve never had a bad experience with them. And I’ve now officially jinxed myself for the ride back home. Consider Virgin America for your next trip!
