May The Free Comic Books Be With You

The stars have aligned and two of the best geek holidays have joined forces: May The Fourth (or Star Wars Day) and Free Comic Book Day.

Visit your local comic book store and pick up some free comics. While you’re there, show your support for their business by picking up a trade you’ve had your eye on. Have kids? Free Comic Book Day is the perfect way to get them excited about reading and comics, and a lot of stores will have special events aimed at children and families. You can find out more at FreeComicBookDay.com.

As for May The Fourth: Wear your favorite Star Wars gear, quote the movie, and tell everyone you meet “May The Fourth Be With You.” Many places are holding Star Wars-themed events, and a lot of online stores (including Her Universe and ThinkGeek) have special Star Wars promotions happening that day only.

What are you doing on May 4th? And which comic shop will you be stopping in? I won’t be able to make it out to one myself, which saddens me greatly. Let me know what you get so I can live vicariously through you!

Minimalist Star Wars Prints

star wars prints

Daniel Price of DEPdesigns sent me a wonderful email recently: He wanted to know if he could send me his new R2-D2 and C-3PO prints to review. Umm, heck yes. I showed them to Mr. Geek and he went “What? YES!” Basically, these prints are inspiring us to re-do our wall of geek art. Pictures to come. But in the meantime, take a look at these pieces. To me, they’re more than just representations of characters, it’s a way to say “We’re BFFs” to a friend or show that you and your roommate go perfectly well together. And the 11 x 17 size means they’re perfect to frame and put up next to each other on a wall.

You can get the prints from the DEPdesigns Etsy shop for $26 for the set. And while you’re there, look around a bit. I’m loving his Ryan Gosling and Wonder Woman prints as well! And the Aladdin print. And the Dexter ones. Oh, and the Black Widow…

Vintage Altered Teacups

iloveyouteacup

Surprise your sweetie with some vintage altered teacups from Etsy shop Geekdetails. The ones featured above would make a perfect Valentine’s Day gift or wedding present, but the shop has cups that work for multiple occasions. Relax with an episode of Doctor Who and the Don’t Blink or Timelord cups, or let a frenemy or roommate know your true feelings with some of the other options. I can’t picture a better way to take my tea.

Teacups and sets, $18-64 at Etsy.com.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside” Geek-ified

Mr. Geek and I decorated the tree this weekend and put on Christmas music for the first time this year. Although the music Pandora plays is nice, it’s missing the geek flair we all love with our songs. I was incredibly psyched this morning to see that Kirby Krackle and The Doubleclicks teamed up to do a Star Wars-themed cover of one of my favorite Christmas songs “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” It sounds fantastic!

This will be on repeat in between the rest of the Christmas music for sure.

What’s your favorite holiday song?

Happy Geek Pride and Towel Day!

Today’s a doozy–not only is it Geek Pride Day and the 35th anniversary of Star Wars coming out, but it’s also Towel Day on behalf of Douglas Adams, who wrote “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

Carrying a towel with you will help you be prepared for anything, and this towel in particular will help you out more than most. The Fast-Dry Towel from Discovery Trekking dries fast (hence the name), is antimicrobial and has 93% UV protection. It will keep you warm, dry, protected, and it won’t smell bad or grow bacteria. Can’t beat that!

Fast-Dry Towel, $14.95-29.95 at DailyGrommet.com.
